The Dermatology Residency Program at Cooper University Hospital and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University is committed to a thorough, well-rounded education in dermatology. Exposure to every facet of the specialty is ensured through the variety of clinical settings provided in Southern New Jersey. Our residents are constantly exposed to complex medical dermatology, pediatric dermatology, and surgical oncology in an urban, underserved setting in Camden, NJ. The general dermatology clinic in Marlton, NJ, provides foundational dermatologic training in a suburban setting, with heavy exposure to cutaneous oncology. In addition, the dermatologic surgery clinic in Marlton allows for exceptional training in surgical and cosmetic dermatology. Residents are exposed to a large volume of cases, complex reconstructions, and a wide array of cosmetic procedures.
The faculty and staff are dedicated to training well-rounded individuals, and are available to interact with and personally advise the residents on a daily basis. Unlike larger programs, our residents enjoy a unique faculty to resident ratio of > 2:1, enhancing the overall educational process. We take pride in the fact that our residents and fellows work closely with the faculty, both in the outpatient clinical setting as well as during in-hospital consultations. Each resident maintains a full complement of active academic pursuits, immersing themselves in clinical research endeavors and peer-reviewed journal writing. Since the inception of the program over 25 years ago, we are proud that our graduates continue a first-time 100 percent pass rate on the board certification exam.
Our nationally regarded team offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment of disorders of the hair, skin, nails, and mucous membranes. The providers are board-certified in general dermatology, pediatric dermatology, and dermatopathology. All faculty are actively engaged in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, and are prolific contributors to the dermatologic literature. Our doctors are regularly invited to speak at national and international meetings and are fellows of the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, International Society of Dermatology, and Society of Pediatric Dermatology.
In addition to excellent training and mentorship in general dermatology, our practice includes a world-renowned Mohs surgeon on staff who regularly lectures in the fields of dermatologic surgery and cosmetic dermatology. The Chief of our Procedural Dermatology and Mohs Surgery team has also been the president of the American Society of Dermatology Surgery. In addition, we have recently expanded our Mohs program to include a second board-certified and nationally-recognized attending, further adding to our extensive faculty and training mentors. Our residents receive extensive training using the latest cosmetic procedures, and we are the only residency training centers in South Jersey to offer hands-on training in the use of narrow band UVB, PUVA, and Excimer laser phototherapy.
We work closely with the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper coordinating care for our patients with metastatic melanoma, cutaneous lymphomas, and other complex cancers. In addition, we strive to be advocates for the underserved population of Camden and address their health care needs in a compassionate and thoughtful way. We believe that teaching how to address not only the disease, but also the person, with respect to all aspects of care, is the best way to shape our future physicians.
Accreditation
The Dermatology Residency fulfills training requirements as stated by The American Board of Dermatology and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Certification
Upon completion of the residency, participants will be eligible to take the American Board of Dermatology certifying examination.
